Washington DC - The administration of the President of the United States (US), Donald Trump , plans to close the two remaining US consulates on Russian territory . The closure plan is being discussed towards the end of Trump's presidency, who will be replaced by US President-elect Joe Biden at the beginning of next year.
As reported by AFP , Saturday (19/12/2020), Biden is expected to take over the post amid high tensions between the US and Russia. Information about the planned closure of the US Consulate in Russia was reported by leading US media, CNN , which quoted a letter dated December 10 sent by the State Department to the US Congress. Mentioned CNN quoting the letter that the closure plan 'responded to the challenge of staffing continues to exist for the US Mission in Russia after the US Mission personnel restrictions applied to Russia in 2017 and the impasse that emerged with the relevant Russian diplomat visa'. About 10 diplomats assigned to the consulate will reportedly be transferred to the US Embassy in Moscow, while 33 local staff will lose their jobs. "No action regarding the Russian Consulate in the United States is planned," said the CNN report . The closure of the two consulates will make the US Embassy in Moscow the last US diplomatic mission in Russia. In March 2018, Russian authorities ordered the closure of the US Consulate in St Petersburg amid a diplomatic row sparked by the poisoning of former Russian intelligence agent, Sergei Skripal, on British territory. It is not clear whether the closure of the two US consulates in Russia will take place before January 20, 2021, when Biden is officially sworn in as US President. The US State Department has not yet commented on CNN's report .
