Earlier, Trump said in a tweet on Twitter that large-scale hacks of US government agencies including the Treasury were "under control" on Saturday (19/12) local time.

But in his tweet, Trump undermined his own administration's assessment that Russia was behind the cyber attack, saying China "may" have also been involved, without providing any evidence.

As reported by AFP news agency on Monday (21/12/2020), Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin did not directly deny Beijing's involvement, but called the US allegations of the cyberattack "not serious, and contradictory."

"The accusations made by the US against China are always a joke, because of political motives," Wang said at a news conference today.

"The US has been politicizing cybersecurity issues, continuing to spread false information without conclusive evidence ... in an attempt to destroy China's image and mislead the international community," he added.

Earlier in July, two Chinese nationals were charged by the US for trying to steal Corona virus vaccine research and hacking into hundreds of companies. Beijing denies this and accuses Washington of "slander".

Trump's tweet on Saturday contradicted Secretary of State Mike Pompeo's comments the day before about the source and severity of the cyber attack. Pompeo said the cyberattack was "pretty clear" a Russian job. It said there were significant attempts to use third-party software to "essentially embed code in US government systems".

Cyber ​​experts say the attacks could be far-reaching and take months to unravel. US officials have previously blamed Moscow for the cyber attack, but none have accused Beijing. The Russian government itself has denied involvement in the cyber attack.​
